Proconceive Folic Acid

Women planning a pregnancy or who are in the first three months of pregnancy

This medicine will not be suitable for all women wishing to reduce the risk of birth defects. Some women are at a higher risk of conceiving a child with a neural tube defect and will need to take a higher daily folic acid dose than is found in this medicine. If you or your partner, or someone in you or your partner's family, have a neural tube defect such as spina bifida, you fall into this higher risk group. You are also at higher risk if you have had a previous pregnancy affected by a neural tube defect, or if you have coeliac disease (or other malabsorption state), diabetes mellitus, sickle-cell anaemia, or are taking antiepileptic medicines. Women in these higher risk groups are advised to take a five milligram dose of folic acid daily before conception and continued until the twelfth week of pregnancy. This dose is higher than that contained in Preconceive tablets. You should ask your doctor for further advice if any of the above applies to you. People with tumours that are dependent on folate for growth. Vitamin B12 deficiency or pernicious anaemia, unless taken in combination with vitamin B12.
