In order to take Senokot correctly, you should follow the correct Senokot Dosage given to you by your doctor or as written in the patient information leaflet. New users should start with the lowest Senokot Dosage and increase it to the maximum dose for each age group, if necessary, by one half of the initial dose each day. Once regularity has been regained the dosage should be reduced and can usually be stopped. One or two 5 ml spoonful’s at night, unless otherwise advised by a medical practitioner. Normally it is sufficient to take Senokot Syrup up to two to three times a week. Not to be used for more than one week. Tell a doctor or pharmacist if:
The symptoms worsen or persist during the use of Senokot Syrup.
There is no bowel movement within 3 days of a Senokot dosage.
You need to take laxatives every day or if abdominal pain persists.
If you have taken too much Senokot Syrup or have taken it for too long, it may cause harmful effects. Some of these harmful effects include:
A lazy bowel, where the muscle in the bowel becomes too relaxed. This means that bowel emptying happens less often. This can lead to long term constipation.
Imbalance of fluids and salts in the body. This can affect the tightness of the muscles such as those in the bowel. It can also affect the salts in the blood.
Low levels of potassium in the blood. This can make you tired, dizzy, make your muscles weak and cause an uneven heart-beat.
Dehydration, making you feel thirsty, feel faint and giving you headaches. It can also mean that you cannot pass enough urine.

When administering this product to incontinent adults, pads should be changed more frequently to prevent extended skin contact with faeces. It is recommended to use changes in diet and bulk forming medicines to control constipation before using this medicine.
Senokot 7.5mg/5ml 12 Years Plus Syrup contains maltitol liquid (E965). If you have been told by your doctor that you have intolerance to some sugars, contact your doctor before taking this medicine.
Caution should be taken if you are diabetic as each 5ml contains 3.2 kilocalories.
Senokot 7.5mg/5ml 12 Years Plus Syrup also contains:
Methyl (E218) and propyl (E216) parahydroxybenzoate, which may cause allergic reactions (possibly delayed).
6.9mg of alcohol (ethanol) in each 5ml dose. The amount in each dose of this medicine is equivalent to less than 1ml beer or 1ml wine. The small amount of alcohol in this medicine will not have any noticeable effects.
0.09 mmol (or 3.51mg) potassium per 5ml. To be taken into consideration by patients with reduced kidney function or patients on a controlled potassium diet.
Stimulant laxatives (Senokot 7.5mg/5 ml Syrup 12 years plus) do not help with weight loss. They do not reduce the absorption of calories or nutrients. They can cause watery stools (diarrhoea), abdominal cramps and dehydration. Dehydration can seem like weight loss.
Overuse of laxatives may damage your health by:
Causing disturbances of electrolyte and mineral balances. Sodium, potassium, magnesium, and phosphorus are electrolytes and minerals that are present in very specific amounts necessary for proper functioning of the nerves and muscles, including those of the colon and heart. Upsetting
this delicate balance can cause incorrect functioning of these vital organs.
Severe dehydration may cause tremors, weakness, blurry vision, fainting, kidney damage, and, in extreme cases, death. Dehydration often requires medical treatment.
Laxative dependency occurs from overuse and can cause the colon to stop reacting to usual doses of laxatives so that larger amounts of laxatives may be needed to produce bowel movements.
Do not take Senokot 7.5mg/5ml 12 Years Plus Syrup if you:
Are allergic to any of the ingredients.
Have blockage or narrowing of the gastro-intestinal tract or bowel (ileus, intestinal obstruction or stenosis)
